Learning to Pause

When I think about the past days of learning, my mind inevitably drifts to work. I think about the progress we made with BorderPlus, the milestones achieved, and the relentless drive that fuelled our journey. But when it comes to personal growth—my own progress—it’s harder to recall. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been so focused on getting things done that I rarely take the time to reflect on myself.

I live in a family of four. Our home is a space I like to keep in order—everything in its place, the food planned and prepared, routines running smoothly. It’s important to me that the house functions well. At the same time, I step out into the world of work, where every minute of my day is defined and occupied by tasks and goals. From the moment I wake up to when I finally rest, there is always something to do.

I don’t know what it feels like to sit idle, to just be. Perhaps that’s what I want to work on as the new year unfolds. The idea of switching off—whether to do something entirely different or nothing at all—feels both foreign and intriguing. It’s a skill I want to cultivate. After all, taking a pause could bring clarity, creativity, and a sense of renewal.

Thinking of some strategies that I might need to incorporate one-by-one.

1. Schedule "Nothing Time"

Just as I plan my work and household tasks, I’ll start scheduling moments for doing nothing. Even if it’s just 15 minutes a day, this intentional pause could help me ease into the art of idleness.

2. Unplug from Technology

Sometimes, the constant connectivity of our devices keeps me in a state of perpetual activity. Setting boundaries with technology could create space for genuine rest.

As I look forward to the new year, I want to make room for stillness in my otherwise busy life. Perhaps, in those quiet moments, I’ll find new ways to grow—personally and professionally. After all, pausing isn’t just about doing nothing; it’s about creating space for something new.
